This was the week where Portland Thorns FC and Gotham FC got to take a break as the rest of the teams played catch up. Results were as follows. (The league returns to action again on Friday, June 6.)
Friday, May 23, 2025
Utah Royals FC vs. Orlando Pride Pride, 3-1.
America First Field on NWSL+ at 9:30 p.m.
Well, a hat trick is the same in this sport as it is in hockey. The hat, this time, was worn by Barbra Banda, one of the leagues' most exciting players to watch. She scored at 6' off a cross by Watt, at 37' unassisted and, um, again a minute later, this time with the assist credited to McCutcheon.
Brecken Mozingo had scored for Utah at 14' (assist from Zornoza), so at least the game was tied for 23 minutes. (I know, there are no moral victories in professional sports, still ...)
Seattle Reign FC vs. Washington Spirit Spirit, 2-1.
Lumen Field on Prime Video at 10:00 p.m.
Washington got goals from Croix Bethune (11' from a Krueger cross) and Ashley Hatch (35' assist by Monday) that lifted the visitors over Seattle which did get a goal from Shea Holmes (17' unassisted) to at least keep the home crown in their seats.
Saturday, May 24, 2025
Houston Dash vs. Bay FC Draw, 2-2.
Shell Energy Stadium on Paramount +/NWSL+ at 5:00 p.m.
Each team walked away with a point as Houston goals by Avery Patterson (33' from Olivieri) and Messiah Bright (88' from Olivieri) sandwiched a pair of Bay goals within three minutes of each other in the second half by Penelope Hocking (53' from Malonson) and Rachel Hill (56' from Kundananji).
After typing that last graph, while it's accurate, it really doesn't convey how exciting it was for the Dash to equalize in the waning minutes of the match. So ... there you go!
Chicago Stars FC vs. Kansas City Current Current, 3-1.
SeatGeek Stadium on ION at 7:30 p.m.
Despite a new formation and shape from Chicago, ultimately Kansas City's offensive depth and speed proved too much at the leagues' best team beat its worst (by table standards, no disrespect meant, Stars fans).
Current scoring was tallied by Bia Zaneratto (34' from Mace), Temwa Chawinga (41' from Zaneratto with a through ball that led the speedy striker who ranks third in goals scored after the match) and Kayla Sharples (60' assist by Rodriguez who crossed the ball) and the Stars got a goal from Shea Groom (51' from Staab) off a set piece. Here are video highlights from the entirety of the match.
Angel City FC vs. Racing Louisville FC Racing Louisville, 3-2.
BMO Stadium on ION at 10:00 p.m.
In what shaped up to be a compelling match to the NWSL "after dark" Saturday slate, the visitors walked away with the three points. (After dark is how east-coast media refer to the late matches from the west when they're not lucky enough to be on that left coast.)
Scoring for Racing Louisville was by Taylor Flint (23' PK), Emma Sears (53' from Wright) both players using their noggins on the goal, and Savannah DeMelo (56' from Fischer) on a fast break opportunity. Angel City got goals from Riley Tiernan (48' from Thompson on a set-piece situation) and Alyssa Thompson (68' PK) but not enough to send the 16,740 fans home with the win. Highlights, with thanks, to the creative team at the NWSL.
Sunday, May 25, 2025
San Diego Wave FC vs. North Carolina Courage Wave, 5-2.
Snapdragon Stadium on CBSSN at 10:00 p.m.
It's as though San Diego had something to prove as it used goals by Perle Morroni (25' from Cascarino), a brace by Adriana Leon (40' from Corley and 60' from Lundkvist), Kristen McNabb (54' headed off a corner for the assist to Armstrong) and Maria Sánchez (90+5' from Barcenas) to pound North Carolina.
Courage goals were scored by Feli Rausch (12' assist by Matsukubo) and Manaka Matsukubo (51' from Shaw).
The win vaulted Wave FC into second place following Week 10.
