The NWSL 2025 free agency begins Sunday, September 1, 2024. Today, the NWSL released the initial list of eligible free agents. This list will be updated on August 30, 2024, with players who have a unilateral or mutual option for the 2025 season with their current club and do not exercise those options.
As part of the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, all players whose contracts expire at the end of the 2024 season may begin negotiations for their 2025 Standard Player Agreements.
Teams can negotiate contract terms with any free agent. A player or player agent may also solicit discussion. If a player does not receive a new offer, the player remains a free agent with their rights unassigned in the NWSL. A player may agree to terms with their current team, or a new team, at any time.
The NWSL also released an explainer about free agency. You can view the full story here and some highlights below:
· Free agency gives athletes the ability to entertain offers from other teams when their contracts expire.
· Teams can negotiate contract terms with any free agent.
· A player’s current team remains responsible for the player’s Standard Player Agreement through the end of the calendar year, regardless if there is a new contract or not.
